Alternatives running out for Mid Valley
WASILLA -- It's up to the School Board to decide whether Mid Valley High School will remain open next year or shuts its doors permanently at the close of school in the spring, say Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District officials. The alternative school, they say, failed to draw enough students this year and struggles each year to reach its projected enrollment -- a struggle that could cost the district thousands of dollars, they say. The district will build its fiscal year 2008 budget proposal without Mid Valley. But Mid Valley surpassed its projections this year and has met its projections each year since it opened in 2002, say those at the school. The district, they say, is playing a numbers game to draw more students to its new career and technical education center, which should open next fall.
Size doesn't matter; lose excuses, exercise
Sports and exercising are not just for athletes. People of all abilities, ages and sizes can find physical activities that are enjoyable. The benefits of exercise are lengthy, losing weight to letting off steam and stress you've been building from work or from the holiday rush. Your doctor may have told you to start exercising. What is the first thing that comes to mind? Some might say, "What will I wear?' or "I don't want my friends to see me this big." Many excuses may come to mind such as, "It's too hot', "I don't have the time" or "I don't have the money." .

Eat, drink and be modest
This year, think of the holidays as an opportunity to practice a healthy lifestyle. Rethinking holiday recipes, carefully filling your plate at a buffet and watching portion sizes can help prevent those extra pounds from sneaking up. How you can make your favorite holiday dishes healthier? Try that potato casserole with light sour cream instead of regular. Try steaming the green beans instead of sauting them in butter. If the temptation to try everything at the table comes around, take small portions and dont go back for more. By actually filling your plate at a buffet, you become more aware of what and how much youre eating. If you eat directly off the buffet you may lose track of what youve eaten. Concerned about serving size? Estimate yours using the following pointers from the American Diabetes Association: A one cup serving of carbohydrates, including fruit, vegetables, pasta or rice is about the size of your fist.
