Christmas Holiday Eating Tips

HANNIBAL, MO -- Experts say the average person puts on about one pound every Christmas from just holiday parties and gatherings.  Add that up...and over a decade you'll be packing on about ten more pounds.  But there are some steps you can take to prevent that from happening.  You can hit the treadmill after each party...or you can do some simple things to guard against overeating.

From sugar Cookies to yummy homemade candy, we all love the goodies that come with the Holidays, but not necessarily the weight that may come with eating them. But before you plan a New Years Crash Diet....consider these alternatives.  First...eat a snack *before* going to a Christmas party or get together. That way you won't pig out on high fat and calorie party foods and desserts.

Also, move away from the food table.

Desperate anorexia battle pushes families overseas

DESPERATE families of young anorexics have sought treatment in Sweden, fearing their children would die under the Australian health system.

The Karolinska Institute has treated 26 girls and young women from Australia since August 2003 at a cost of up to $2000 a day.

The medical university uses a non-drug-based program that treats the disease as a behavioural disorder, rather than the psychiatric illness that it is widely considered to be by the international medical community.

In March the Swedish institute opened the Mandometer Clinic in Melbourne, which offers follow-up treatment but not hospitalisation.

The NSW Government has announced the introduction of a draft eating disorders service plan, following inquiries by The Sun-Herald.

Move, Move, Move For Greater Weight Loss

Incidental activity is very important in the process of losing weight as you can burn more calories than relying on dietary means alone. Fat is burned from the body when cells oxidize to release energy in the form of exercise or movement. When the exercise is done slowly to moderately then the majority of energy is taken from the fat stores.

The loss of fat comes from fat cells all over the body, not from one or more specific area's so spot reduction of a certain area is not possible. The main priority of this article is to show you the quickest and safest way to lose fat from the body.

The key to effective aerobic training that burns off the maximum amount of fat is long-term consistency not intensity. It doesn't matter if you run a mile, jog a mile or walk a mile you will burn exactly the same amount of calories.

Agency pilots health classes for women

The Adams County Health Department is one of four sites in Illinois to pilot a new "Healthy Women" program that explores a broad range of women's health topics.

"It's a great program," said Becky Woodward, health educator at the Health Department. "We're looking at health more multidimensional. It is very comprehensive."

Classes meet for an hour once a week for 10 weeks, with a different topic each week.

The first session is an overview of mental, physical and social health, and also provides blood pressure and cholesterol screenings. The nine topics to follow are cardiovascular disease, diabetes and stroke; nutrition; fitness; stress; substance abuse; violence against women; sexual health; healthy aging; and healthy families.

"The overall goal of the program is to educate women, to give them the knowledge so they can make more informed choices," Woodward said.
