Gain resolve, lose pounds: Advice on keeping shape-up/slim-down ...

Resolutions aren't just for the new year. Just ask Michaelangelo Rosario of Lake Mary, Fla., who several times made - and broke - New Year's resolutions to lose weight. He tried to keep his promise, "but I just couldn't do it," the attorney says.

Rosario weighed 380 pounds in September 2005 when he was told he had sleep apnea and should consider a gastric bypass. That was the catalyst he needed to shed 190 pounds. He did it with five workouts a week, a diet of 1,400 calories a day ... and a heaping helping of resolve.

In the spirit of starting off the New Year right, we asked nutrition and exercise experts for tips on keeping such resolutions. Here is their advice.

1. Make a plan. Think of your shape-up/slim-down plan as a wedding - "it needs a little planning.

Don't Become an Injury Statistic: Kettlebells to the Rescue

"As part of the fire service, you might have heard theses words uttered a few times and its usually after a tough and grueling fire. Those words are usually said as protective gear is getting stripped off, and physical exhaustion is setting in. As a 13-year veteran of my department, I have heard those words many times. They are usually said by the older firefighters, but surprisingly enough I have heard then from a lot of the younger firefighters as well. These are people who are not physically preparing themselves properly, or at all for that matter, for the rigors of firefighting.

Let's face it, firefighting is tough enough as it is. You are wearing and carrying over 75 pounds of gear and equipment, which you have to carry as you climb stairs and nothing ever seems to happen on the ground floor.

Start the new year by turning a new leaf

Although it is exactly one week until it is December 25th, you have but only two weeks before it is exactly January 1st. The start of a New Year. And you know you want to start it right.Your resolution is to lose weight, get fit, and be active, and in interpreting that, you want to start running. Am I wrong? Yep, didn't think so. Many people take that plunge, and it is a healthy decision for sure.First and foremost, get a physical, especially if you are a former smoker, overweight, or have any history of heart disease in your family. You have two weeks to get that done. The next important step is that of purchasing running shoes. These will cost around $80.00 (don't have anyone tell you that you need top of the line shoes). Don't be too cheap on the shoes, though, as injury treatment will cost far more than $80.00.

Three die shoveling snow in Weld County

Three Weld County residents died of heart attacks after becoming exhausted while shoveling snow Thursday, the Greeley Tribune reported this morning.

A Keenesburg man died while a snowplow was carving out a track for firefighters to make their way to his home. The family had given him cardio-pulmonary resuscitation while waiting, but he died before help could arrive.

A Fort Lupton man died outside his home and a second man was pronounced dead upon arrival at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, the paper reported.

Bajaj kick-starting a new shopping experience

Bajaj Auto's marketing strategy for its performance bikes is finally getting clearer with the company's `Probiking' initiatives and outlets.

Bajaj's dealers have been handling the marketing and servicing of all its bikes.

The company is already offering a triumvirate of performance bikes in its current portfolio.

But with the planned launch of a new 220cc Pulsar bike and more of those big-engine variety to come, Bajaj has changed the direction of its marketing strategy for this kind of specialty and performance bikes.

Bajaj had announced plans and is on course to phasing out its current bikes in the economy/entry-level 100cc segment and completely exiting the manufacture of bikes in that size.

The company is expected to focus more on 125cc to 150cc bikes, firmly believing that this will be the segment where most of the demand will come from.
