Rams-Vikings Tilt Could Have Playoff Implications
(Sports Network) - The St. Louis Rams still have a shot at a playoff berth, and will put their chances on the line Sunday when they pay a visit to the Minnesota Vikings at the Metrodome. The Rams have won two in a row, and defeated the Washington Redskins, 37-31, in overtime last Sunday. But they need a lot of help from other clubs this week in order to reach the playoffs for the sixth time in the last eight seasons. Head coach Scott Linehan's squad is one of five teams in the NFC with a 7-8 record and still in the hunt for the final Wild Card berth as Week 17 begins. St. Louis must defeat Tampa Bay and have the New York Giants, Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons all lose or tie to reach the postseason. Minnesota, meanwhile, is out of the playoffs for the second straight year, and first-year head coach Brad Childress will have some work to do this offseason.
Gopher coach likes what he sees at Michigan Tech
When Lucia arrived on campus eight years ago, the once dominant Gopher program was a shadow of its former self. So Lucia rolled up his sleeves and set out to bring the Minnesota program back to national prominence. All his hard work has paid off handsomely. The Golden Gophers are always in the national championship discussion. And this years team, which is currently ranked No. 1 in the country and riding an 18-game unbeaten streak, has to be considered the favorite to win it all. But Lucia has one built in benefit that many other coaches dont have. He coaches in the most fertile recruiting ground in the country. The state of Minnesota produces hockey talent like Detroit use to produce cars. And Lucia has taken full advantage of having all that talent in his own backyard.
Physical Activity in Children Linked to Motor Abilities
Boys and girls who have better motor abilities are more physically active and less likely to be sedentary than children with poorer coordination, research conducted with children between the ages of 8 and 10 at the University at Buffalo has shown. Results of the study appear in the December issue of the journal Pediatrics. While the finding may appear intuitive, few studies have used a valid assessment of motor proficiency in children and compared the outcomes with an objective measure of physical activity, according to Brian H. Wrotniak, Ph.D., lead author on the study. "The primary question of this cross-sectional research was to determine if there is a relationship between how coordinated children were and their level of physical activity," said Wrotniak, who conducted the study while a doctoral student at UB in the departments of Social and Preventive Medicine and Pediatrics.

A tennis promoter father and a tour player daughter make TV news
The Ashland, KY Father/Daughter team Jack Ditty, MD (tennis promoter) and Julie Ditty (WTA professional) will be featured on the Tennis Channel Inside Tennis With The Koz show. Nestled along the banks of the Ohio River where the Bluegrass State meets neighboring West Virginia and Ohio and known as the birthplace of The Judds and Billy Ray Cyrus, Ashland has become a tennis regional tennis hotbed because of the efforts of the Ditty family. Jack Ditty, a dedicated dermatologist, has taken his life-time passion for the sport and passed it on to his family and community. It was electrifying to witness this tennis zealot work indefatigablely on this event. He has promoted this tournament to one of the most popular stops on the circuit, reported Dave Koz Kozlowski, host of the Tennis Channel original series show.
