Al Qaeda UK urged to strike over holidays

Al Qaeda operatives in the greater London area are being encouraged to "strike during the Christian holidays," ABC News reports.

Citing intelligence and law enforcement sources, ABC says Internet chatter and web postings monitored by authorities are behind the concern of an imminent al Qaeda strike.

Apparently, at least some law enforcement officials in Britain fear terror groups will again target mass transit -- bringing back fears of a repeat of the transit bombings in London that killed 52 people on July 7, 2005.

"The threat of another terrorist attempt is ever present. Christmas is a period when that might happen.," Sir Ian Blair, head of London's Metropolitan Police, said on BBC Radio.

While police "have no specific intelligence to do (with) that," Blair said it is a "far graver threat in terms of civilians than either the Cold War or the Second World War.

The most popular New Year's resolution for Americans is to get healthier, whether it is losing weight, exercising more or eating better, but many Americans don't stick with it. In fact, as indicated by eDiets.com, more than 30 percent of people don't make it to February with their New Year's resolution.

Rush on gyms starts as holiday feasts end

With people eager to work off the holiday ham or get a jump start on New Year's resolutions, it's crunch time for local gyms.

The period between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day is the busiest time of year for new memberships.

"(New members) have been busy all fall and now say, 'I have the chance to lose all this weight.' Traditionally people think, 'OK, this is a new year and I better get started,' " said Gail Connaughton, general manager for Premier Health and Fitness Club in Annapolis.

January enrollments account for 12 to 14 percent of her gym's total membership.

The holidays, with big meals and busy schedules, make it tough to keep a regular fitness routine, said Nicole Womick, membership director at the Severn Valley Tennis and Fitness Club in Gambrills.
