All he needs is love

To mark the date, Pomes and his Mostly Moptop band play a memorial concert at Five Towns College, one of a handful of commemorations in the area.

"I wanted to celebrate what he gave us," says Pomes, who by day is marketing director for Square One Publishers in Garden City Park. A self-proclaimed "Lennonologist," Pomes serves on the advisory counsel for Five Towns' John Lennon Center for Music & Technology on the Dix Hills campus. The center, brainchild of a Five Towns vice president, Martin Cohen, was dedicated in 2005 by Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, who embraced Cohen's proposal for an academic center focusing on Lennon's canon as a way to inspire student creativity.

Tonight's John Lennon Memorial Ceremony and Tribute Concert, at the Dix Hills Center for the Performing Arts, begins at 7 with readings by former Suffolk County poet laureate George Wallace and others, including Pomes.

Video game boosts fitness, study says

Dance Dance Revolution, a video game, is helping kids improve heart health and fitness, even if weight loss isnt always occurring, according to the preliminary findings of a West Virginia University clinical study.

So far, what weve shown with the overweight kids in our study is that there has been an improvement in fitness level and an improvement in factors for cardiovascular disease, said Emily Murphy, a research instructor in the Department of Pediatrics at WVUs School of Medicine who helped conduct the study.

Were still looking at some of the blood markers and indices that would show us more specific changes, she said.

Slimline Croft to be a friend reunited

Lee Croft has an added incentive for winning back his first team place when Norwich City visit Southampton tomorrow - the chance to line up against his “best friend in football".The slimmed-down winger could be recalled for the Coca-Cola Championship match at St Mary's Stadium (3pm), despite not having played a match for seven weeks because of an ankle injury. And if he makes the starting line-up, he's set to share the spotlight with former Manchester City colleague Bradley Wright-Phillips.The two 21-year-olds both left the City of Manchester Stadium in July this year, Croft to Carrow Road in a £600,000 move and Wright-Phillips for an undisclosed fee to the Saints. But they are in touch regularly and have already traded good-natured banter ahead of their weekend meeting.“Probably my best friend in football, Bradley, plays for Southampton, so it will be nice to get back for that game if I can," said Croft, who has missed eight first team matches since suffering the injury in the 5-0 defeat at Stoke.

Running game keeps going

PISCATAWAY — With only nine players dressed and an opponent who loved to run and shoot, the last thing the Rutgers women's basketball team needed last night was a faced-paced game.

What they certainly didn't need was overtime. And they didn't get that. What they got was triple overtime.

More importantly they got a win, evening their record at 4-4 with a wild 89-84 victory over Mississippi.

It was the first triple-overtime game in Rutgers history.

Mississippi, which jacked up 92 shots, fell to 7-3.

Freshmen were the lead chapter in this never-ending story. Forward Brittany Ray poured in 23 points (3-for-5 3-pointers), backup center Rahidat Junaid came up huge in the overtimes, finishing with 14 points. Classmate Epiphanny Prince scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds.

Attention: LPGA, PGA, USGA: Boys Should Be Boys, But Girls Can ...

It is a simple case of survival of the fittest, where a lesser opponent strives to better herself by competing against stronger competition. That gender is involved is both unimportant and coincidental.

For a person to intentionally compete against women or men of lesser ability is ridiculous, unless an equalizing agent (read: handicap strokes) is involved. In Kontak's case, his performances on the Canadian and Nationwide tours would rate him as superior to the competitors in the US Women's Open. He would be a longer driver of the ball, a better putter, and a more accurate iron player. Unless he had nerves of pasta, he would win the US Women's Open.

What about Kevin Na competing on the Nationwide Tour (and winning) at the MCCCPBCOSB? Simple. Na was rehabbing an injury, against players who aspire to (and are darn close to) compete against him on the PGA Tour.

Working your heart

How hard do I have to workout? How far do I have to go? I workout 2 hours every other day of the week and I still cant lose those last 10 pounds. Why do I keep getting injured when I try to run? These are all questions and comments people make about their training that seems to have no simple solution.

I want to give you that solution. Its called a heart rate monitor. Whether your goal is to win a race or just live a long healthy life, using a heart rate monitor is the single most valuable tool you can have in your training equipment arsenal. And using one in the way I am going to describe will not only help you shed those last few pounds, but will enable you to do it without either killing yourself in training or starving yourself at the dinner table.

I came from a swimming background, which in the 70s and 80s when I competed was a sport that lived by the No Pain, No Gain motto.
