Daily Briefing

In its 12th holiday season, Amazon.com said it again had its "best ever" sales and that it shipped more than 99 percent of orders in time to meet holiday deadlines around the globe. As many as 3.4 million units went out in a single day. The company said it sold 1,000 Xbox 360 game consoles in 29 seconds as part of a promotion that slashed two-thirds off the regular retail price. Demand for the Microsoft Corp. machines was so high that Amazon.com's site bogged down briefly on Thanksgiving Day, generating bitter complaints from shoppers and forcing the retailer to change procedures for subsequent promotions.

Medicine without borders

Manisha Dhingra dissects a career in medical tourism — an industry that employs a wide range of professionals from doctors to interpreters.

Consider the numbers. Last year, more than 1,50,000 overseas patients availed of medical treatment in Indian hospitals. The medical tourism industry in India is worth $333 million (Rs 1,450 crore), while a study by CII-McKinsey estimates that the country could earn Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 crore by 2012.

The idea

The concept is simple enough. And should come as no surprise to those familiar with the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) boom. India's cutting-edge yet affordable facilities in the healthcare sector, combined with our tradition of alternative medicine, clubbed with the many tourist delights on offer, make the country an ideal setting for international patients to seek treatment and visit, both at the same time.

Al Qaeda UK urged to strike over holidays

Al Qaeda operatives in the greater London area are being encouraged to "strike during the Christian holidays," ABC News reports.

Citing intelligence and law enforcement sources, ABC says Internet chatter and web postings monitored by authorities are behind the concern of an imminent al Qaeda strike.

Apparently, at least some law enforcement officials in Britain fear terror groups will again target mass transit -- bringing back fears of a repeat of the transit bombings in London that killed 52 people on July 7, 2005.

"The threat of another terrorist attempt is ever present. Christmas is a period when that might happen.," Sir Ian Blair, head of London's Metropolitan Police, said on BBC Radio.

While police "have no specific intelligence to do (with) that," Blair said it is a "far graver threat in terms of civilians than either the Cold War or the Second World War.

Tales from a great gig

I like to tell people that I actually made Dave Barry laugh. Sure, he may have laughed just to make me feel good, but he laughed, and that's all that matters. Barry is probably America's best-known humorist — and a pretty funny guy. Cal Poly Arts brought Barry to town to speak on April 8.

The whole reason celebrities talk to us is to promote their stuff. So when I began to ask Dave Barry about his latest book, I was surprised when he said I didn't have to ask him about it. "You don't need to feel obligated to even finish it," he said. But of course I did — it's Dave Barry.

Because Barry often writes about band names (fans regularly send him their ideas), I ran a few of mine past him. He liked two of four — which I figure is a great percentage in baseball so at least a decent number for band names.
