Who needs a river, when you can get the same effect by rowing indoors? The creator of Indo-Row Josh Crosby said you can burn 400 to 900 calories in a 50-minute class. "It’s working every major muscle group in your body," said Crosby who also said Indo-Row builds long, lean muscles and provides a good cardio-workout. Payday Mayday: The law should treat adults as adults
Beginning Oct. 1, 2007, no U.S. lender may charge more than 36-percent interest to a military person on active duty, or his family — a measure Congress aimed principally at protecting soldiers from payday loans. Several states have effectively banned such loans; in Oregon, a 36-percent cap goes into effect July 1. A group led by the Service Employees International Union is pushing for a similar cap in this state. Rep. Sherry Appleton, D-Poulsbo, has introduced such a bill. "We're not asking for a ban," Appleton told a Senate hearing in Olympia Dec. 1, but a ban is what it amounts to. Current Washington law sets a ceiling of $15 in interest and fees per $100 loan amount, up to a loan of $500. If you want $100 for two weeks, you write a check for $115 and postdate it.

ParticipACTION seeks new CEO to re-launch federal fitness program
A prominently placed ad in the Globe and Mail says the now-defunct federal fitness awareness program is seeking a chief executive officer to "re-launch" the campaign. The not-for-profit program began in the early 1970s and for three decades produced a series of television advertisements promoting healthy living and exercise - including one well-known 1973 spot that compared the fitness of a 60-year-old Swede with that of a 30-year-old Canadian. The previous Liberal government killed ParticipACTION in 2001, which at the time had a budget of $350,000. There has been talk in the House of Commons recently about bringing back the program in order to take aim at soaring obesity rates across the country. Ontario's Health Promotions Minister Jim Watson said in June that he wanted to Ottawa bring back the program.
The Gear Junkie: When the going gets rough, let your gear do some ...
Good gear can save your life. This past year, as I competed in a dozen ultraendurance adventures around the country, the value of top-notch outdoors equipment continually hit home. A case in point: Three days into the Primal Quest Adventure Race in Utah in July, my body was wrecked. Sun blasted down. Temperatures hit 120 degrees. But my shoes, clothes, backpack and trekking gear -- all specialized equipment made for the desert -- let me keep on for another five days to finish the event. From the deserts of Utah, to mountains in Vail, surf in San Luis Obispo, Calif., and whitewater in West Virginia, the following 10 products stand out as gear that kept me going this year through tough and epic times in the great outdoors. OR Sun Runner cap -- My head would have fried in the deserts of Utah without this cap, which has a wraparound neck skirt to ward off the rays.
