’Amahl’ singer takes on acting

Sharpe has taught painting, drawing, and design at SUCO since 1987 and has performed at numerous local events and fundraisers, notably for Hurricane Katrina victims and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. charities. Although not a difficult singing role for soprano, the part of Amahl’s mother required Sharpe to work on her acting skills, something with which she admitted to not having a lot of experience.

"I had to infuse acting into the role," she said, but once she became familiar with director Diane Elliott’s stage direction, she said it was "fun to learn.

"The first thing is to learn the music, and then try to communicate the role; then, to interact with the others on stage so that your movements make sense," she said.

Sharpe said she knew at a young age growing up in Michigan that she wanted to be an artist and opera singer.

Making successful New Year’s changes

We put way too much merit on the fact that New Years is coming, so all these changes will happen, but nothing really changes. Sayler said the first thing to do is to decide that the changes will be part of you daily life, as much as getting up in the morning or grocery shopping plays. .

Ownership change frustrates some fitness club members

SPOKANE -- Starting with the new year, all 24-Hour Fitness Centers in the area will now be Oz Fitness. The transition is causing a headache for some members who say with the switch their contracts aren't being honored.

More than two years ago Oz Fitness bought the eight 24-Hour Fitness clubs in the region but it is only now that those changes are becoming visible with 24-Hour Fitness signs coming down. The change in ownership also means members can no longer have access to every 24-Hour Fitness Center in the nation as they did before.

Oz Fitness says it sent out notices of the change in ownership during the summer of 2004 and another notice just this November. The company says in addition, every contract explains the possibility of the change.

Rashid nears full fitness

Many in England are looking to young Yorkshire leg-spinner Adil Rashid for inspiration during the next Ashes contest in 2009 - and the under-19 international is contemplating a playing return after suffering a stress fracture of the back.

He is close to full fitness and is hoping to bowl at the indoor school at Headingley Carneigie in a couple of weeks' time.

Rashid took 6-67 on his Yorkshire debut against Warwickshire at Scarborough and finished with 25 Liverpool Victoria County Championship wickets at 25 apiece as Yorkshire narrowly escaped relegation.

But it was during the run-in to the season that the spinner started to experience discomfort and a scan revealed that he was suffering from a stress fracture.

Rashid was ruled out of a trip to India for specialist coaching late this year, as well as the England Under-19 tour of Malaysia next January.
